Choosing bathroom tile for Miami humidity

Zellige, porcelain, and natural stone, and which ones actually hold up in a house that never fully dries out.

Choosing bathroom tile for Miami humidity

Every tile looks good in a showroom in air conditioning. The question is how it looks after two summers in a bathroom with a teenager who takes twenty-minute showers and never turns on the fan.

Porcelain: the workhorse

Dense, nearly non-porous, indifferent to moisture. Large-format porcelain also means fewer grout lines, and grout is where humidity does its damage. If you want the look of marble or limestone with none of the maintenance, this is the answer, and the good ones are very good now.

Zellige and handmade ceramic: worth it, with conditions

The variation and the way it catches light are the reason people fall for it, and I am one of them. The conditions: it is glazed, so the surface is fine, but the irregular edges mean more grout exposure. Use it on walls, seal the grout, and make sure the bathroom has a fan that actually vents outside. On a shower floor, no.

Natural stone: beautiful, and it wants attention

Marble, limestone, and travertine are porous. In Miami that means sealing on a schedule, and even then, a limestone shower floor in a house without great ventilation will etch and darken. I use stone where it gets admired more than soaked: vanity tops, a feature wall, a powder bath. In a kids' bath that gets flooded nightly, I reach for porcelain and put the personality in the color instead.

Three things that matter more than the tile

The sage bathroom pictured is a vertical-stack ceramic with epoxy grout and a walnut vanity that has been sealed within an inch of its life. Two years in, it looks like the day we installed it.
